Scouts 5 Day Canoe Trip in La Verendrye

This year’s 5 day canoe trip was Circuit 15 in La Verendrye, a massive nature preserve about 3 hours north of Ottawa that is almost twice as big as Algonquin Park. The 32nd started doing these longer trips almost 10 years ago now because they are more demanding and a greater challenge than the shorter 3 day weekend trips. This allows for a greater opportunity for Scouts to learn about self-reliance and teamwork. The 5 day trip involves packing up camp and paddling every day to a new campsite. This and the longer nature of the trip including portaging really brings out the team spirit in everyone as they all learn to work together. We met at the school at 8:30 am and were packed and on the road by 9. This year there were 11 Scouts and 5 Scouters. With a stop for gas in Maniwaki it was just over 3 hours to get to Le Domaine, the park office. We got ourselves checked in and unloaded, and just after 1:30 we were hitting the water. We had only about 4.5 km to go to our campsite

Newfoundland Exchange - Newfoundland End

On Friday July 28th eight of our ten Scouts met at the airport to embark upon an epic journey to Newfoundland - the second half of our exchange with 1st Topsail and 1st Conception Bay South (CBS) troops. Joining us were 17 Scouts from the 115th Ottawa Sea Scouts, and 2 from the 17th Ottawa Westminster. Well, technically we were joining the 115th. Our plane arrived around 10 pm Newfoundland time, and we were quickly whisked away by parents and Scouters of both of the Newfoundland troops to Camp St. George which is owned and maintained by 1st CBS. It was about a 45 minute drive and we were arriving close to midnight. Excitement was high as newfound friends re-united. Since our arrival was so late almost everyone bunked down on the floor of the camp, though a few like your humble author did set up their tents outside in the field. It was past 1am when things finally settled down and we called for quiet time.

White Tail Beavers from the 32nd Ottawa (Thursday) deliver their donation to the Parkdale Food Centre They call it a Northern Lights Quest. Each year, Beavers in their final year of the program complete outdoor skill badges, volunteer hours and contribute to making the world (and their community) a better place through a community service project. Here are six of the nine Beavers who raised $314.45 for the Parkdale Food Centre through a lemonade stand and bake sale at the Hintonburg Community Centre this spring. This is in addition to $300 raised for the centre by Beavers and Scouts from the 32nd Ottawa this past winter. Manager Karen Secord generously provided a personal tour of the centre to show Beavers how their contribution would be put to work helping families in their community. Beavers get stuff done!
